With Gratitude To God's Grace

5. Do Not Let Loose Even a Little Bit

One lesson I learned from guarding the mountain area was that one must be always on the watch and never let loose. This was what I learned from failures. It happened twice when we diligently patrolled and everything went well: suddenly it rained, we thought no one would come out to steal in such a rain, so we went into the straw shed to seek shelter from the rain. When the rain stopped, we found out that a lot of sweet potatoes had been stolen. Since then, the heavier it rained, the more we patrolled in our raincoats. We dared not take this lightly. Another time, when finally we received a good midnight snack, two of us sat in the straw shed to enjoy it and thought it was just a while and nothing would happen. Quite a few sweet potatoes were stolen again. When we think it does not matter, and we can relax a little bit, that is the very time that we leave a foothold for the enemy to cause a great loss. This made me understand deeply what the Lord said: "Be careful or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap. For it will come upon all those who live on the face of the whole earth. Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man" (Luke 21:34-36). It is absolutely true. If a believer does not meditate on the Lord's word day and night or is not always on the watch, he will suffer great loss when the time comes. The devil has never let us loose even for a moment; he takes every opportunity to harm us.
