With Gratitude To God's Grace

3. My Mother Was Saved

My mother was devoted to Buddhism and lived in a Buddhist convent in our house. She recited the sutras and practiced Buddhism every morning and evening. However, due to the fact that the Japanese army pressed on, she had to leave the Buddhist convent and move to the inner land. My grandmother, my younger sister and I had come to believe in the Lord one after another. She had never been against our believing, but she, herself, did not want to believe in Jesus. It was not until we moved back to Hangzhou after the Japanese surrendered that she accepted Jesus as her Savior. She was gradually losing weight and becoming irascible. My father made a remark that she was thin as a monkey. She was so thin that the bones of her cheeks were sticking out. Because of this she went to the provincial hospital for a check up. A famous Japanese doctor found out that the tumor in her womb was worsening. Her life was in danger. He asked her to wait until next spring, when it was warm, to have the operation. For the operation she needed to have signatures from relatives. The hospital would not take responsibility in case of any problem. After she returned home, she was heavy hearted. How could one not be self-centered when one suffered from an incurable disease? She complained that neither her husband nor her daughters had pity on her. My younger sister and I were completely unaware of how serious her illness was; therefore, we were carefree, studied and had fun as usual. Still we were amazed when we saw Mother gradually become stronger and younger. Her mental outlook took on a mew dimension, and even she, herself, forgot that she was a sick person. In the spring, my uncle's little boy got a cold. My mother loved this child very much so she took him to the provincial hospital for treatment. The doctor and nurse saw her, and they said to her: "Mrs. Xu, now the weather is warm, you can come to have your operation." This gave her a scare. That day the Japanese doctor checked her again to prepare her to be hospitalized. He checked here and there, and he could not find that tumor. Nurse Lian Lee kept on saying: "Check again, have a look again." How could it disappear? This was impossible! Since the time I was five or six years old, my mother had carried this tumor in her lower belly. One could feel it at a touch.

I remembered that the boss of Shanghai Asia Tobacco Company invited a living Buddha to be worshipped in his house. Those who went for healing were in a long time. I had accompanied my mother as she knelt in line and waited her turn to go in to see the living Buddha. That living Buddha kicked on her belly, but she was not healed at all. That tumor had always been in my mother. How could it disappear? The doctor said: "Mrs. Xu, there is no need for an operation. The tumor cannot be found." My mother could hardly believe him. Could the tumor really disappear? She immediately took a car to a private hospital and asked Dr. Wong to give her another check up. He checked her carefully and told mother: "Congratulations! Very few people could be so lucky as you are. The tumor disappeared by itself. No need for an operation!" My mother was extremely happy and surprised. As soon as she came home, she told us: "From now on, I will believe in Jesus." "Why mother?" We felt so surprised. She said: "After I knew the tumor had gotten worse and I needed an operation, I said a prayer, 'Lord Jesus, if you are the true God, please heal my tumor so that I do not need an operation, because I am very scared.' Now I really do not need an operation. I must believe in Jesus."
